Nero d'Avola
Nero d'Avola is a red wine variety from Sicily. It was used almost exclusively to fortifying weaker reds, to add colour and body to other wines of the region, like as the Marsala wine. The Nero d’Avola take its name from the colour of the grapes and from the region of Avola, where this variety of wine is mainly produced.
Moscato & Passito
Moscato comes from the Muscat grape or from the sub-variety known as Moscatello. It can be used to produce some fine whites. In Sicily and the nearby islands has a particular golden or light amber colour, the finest dessert wine. The passito wine is obtained by using late harvest grapes which went trough a drying process, either naturally or on external support or a combination of both methods. Passito wines are sweet and very rich in alcohol.
Marsala
Marsala is crafted from local, indigenous white grapes – like Catarratto, Grillo or the highly aromatic Inzolia grape. The Marsala is brown or amber colored with a strong and typical aroma. The colour is given from the combination of three local red grape variety. The fermentation of Marsala is halted by the addition of a grape brandy when the residual sugar content reaches the pre-determined levels according to the sweet/dry style the maker is shooting for.
Zibibbo
Zibibbo wine is also known as Bianco di Pantelleria. It is a quite rare aromatic white wine with a good structure made of a particular grape called “zibibbo”, good for sweet wine, that was brought to Sicily by the Arabs during their domination.
Malvasia
Malvasia is a sub-variety of Muscato. It is a golden, amber, slightly fortified wine. Clear and bright with an excellent consistency. Well suited with rich soft desserts as well as sharp cheese with notes of herbs.
Sicilian wines Sicily and Puglia contends the record of the region's largest producer of Italian wine. In the northern part of the island there are vineyards along the slopes of Etna. Today, the wines that are produced on these fertile slopes of the volcano belong to the most ancient Sicilian Doc, recognized as far as in August 1968, and they are produced in four different types, including an interesting White Superior.
Other famous wine producing areas are located even in the mountains Peloritani, overlooking Messina. In Lipari deserves to be mentioned the Malvasia of Lipari; in the southwest, the plains between Syracuse and Ragusa and at the foothills of the mountains iblei. We can mention the "Albanello" of Syracuse, The "Eloro" a white or red wine (produced in the area of Noto and Avola) and the famous Nero d'Avola. In central and southern part of the island there are famous vineyards in the hills of Agrigento, in the province of Caltanissetta, in the high hills of Vallelunga. To the east, finally, the rich plains of Trapani, Marsala and Alcamo full of renowned vineyards.
Most of the finest wines in Sicily are not produced following a disciplinary Doc method. So, wines only boast typical geographical indication (IGT) "Sicily", that can be obtained from wines produced in all provinces of Sicily.
Greeks were the first ones to plant vines in Sicily. They produced a fine wine in Syracuse, the wine "Pollio".
