Nature reserve and parks in Sicily versione francese versione italiana Sicily is not just art and culture, but also Nature and wonderful landscapes. Some of them are settled long the coast, in rather inaccessible place and for this reason they are well preserved and they still keep their wild nature.

In Sicily there are 4 Regional Parks and 76 Regional Nature Reserves, under the protection of the region. There are no National Parks in Sicily.

The Etna Park, famous for the highest European active volcano, has been the first Park to be established in Sicily in 1987. The landscape of the park is variegated and extremely rich thanks to its eruptions and for its lava flows.

The Nebrodi Park is the largest protected area of Sicily, it is characterized by different reliefs and no even landscapes, by the typical evergreen Mediterranean scrub and by many lakes.

The Madonie Park is located in the province of Palermo, it includes the mountain chains of Madonie and it houses many species of plants and animals.

The Alcantara fluvial Park is located in Francavilla di Sicilia district, along the Alcantara river. The erosion of river formed high basalt walls, transforming the scenery in a large canyon.

Among the Regional Nature Reserves we can find:

The Nature Reserve of Vendicari is located in the Province of Syracuse, between Noto and Marzamemi. The reserve is the goal of migratory birds. The landscape is rich and varied: rocky shores, sandy beaches, Mediterranean, swamps, salt marshes and cultivated areas.

The Nature Reserve of Cavagrande del Cassibile is settled in the area of Avola, Noto and Syracuse. The large reserve is crossed by the river Cassibile that has created cause of the erosion phenomenon big and suggestive canyons.

The Nature Reserve of Zingaro, is located in the province of Trapani between the villages of San Vito lo Capo, Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani. Seven kilometres of uncontaminated coastline. It is the only area of Sicily without a coastal road. The reserve houses 350 variety of vegetable specimens, like as 40 endemic races, 25 different orchids species, 39 different and rare species of birds and many local marines species.

The Nature Reserve of the river Ciane and the Salt-pans of Syracuse includes the are of the river Ciane and the area of salt-pans settled in Syracuse outskirts.

The Nature Reserve of the river Simeto, is located in Catania district to the mouth of the river Simeto.

The Nature Reserve of the Biviere of Gela, is the biggest lake in Sicily and it is very important for the migratory movement of birds.

The Nature Reserve of Pergusa Lake, settled in the province of Enna, it is a very important site for the migratory movement of a lot of species of birds.

The Nature Reserve Macalube of Aragona, is situated between Aragona and Agrigento district. It is characterised by a strange landscape of small craters that throw muddy clay high up into the air. These are the mini volcanoes of Macalube.
